Despite leaving the reader impatient and wanting more action, the first half provides much-needed context for the latter half of the novel and builds the tension that makes the ending satisfying. Foley spends much of the first half of her novel unwinding the threads connecting each character to Ben and their potential motives for his disappearance. The clock is ticking and Jess needs to find him before she also finds herself in jeopardy. Ben’s investigation into a story lead has put him in real danger. As Jess begins to ask questions and search him, it becomes clear that something sinister is unfolding. No one seems to know where he is and no one seems to want to help find him. It follows a young woman – Jess – escaping turmoil in her personal life for the refuge of her journalist brother's (Ben) home in a posh Parisian apartment building, only to find him missing.
